When to Resurface, Remodel, or Rebuild an Aging Gilbert Pool

Published July 1, 2026

Aging backyard pool being renovated in Gilbert, AZ

Most backyard pools in Gilbert were built ten to twenty-five years ago, and the desert sun and hard water take a steady toll on the finishes long before the structure ever gives out. The good news is that a worn pool almost never needs to be torn out. The trick is knowing which level of work it actually needs. Here is how to read the warning signs.

Watch the Interior Finish First

Run your hand along the wall below the waterline. If the plaster feels like coarse sandpaper, shows gray or brown stains, or has spots where the finish has chipped away to the gunite, the interior has reached the end of its life. Standard white plaster lasts roughly 5 to 10 years here, while a pebble finish can go 15 to 25. A rough interior is the single most common reason a pool near Val Vista Drive gets renovated, and it is usually a straightforward resurface.

Check the Tile and Coping

Scale buildup at the waterline, loose or missing tiles, and cracked coping stones are the next thing to look for. These often show up around the same time the plaster wears out, which is why so many owners bundle new tile and coping into a resurface. Doing both at once means one drain and one crew instead of two separate jobs. Our pool resurfacing work is where most of these projects start.

Listen to the Equipment Pad

An old single-speed pump that runs loud and drives up your power bill is a sign the pad is due for attention. Swapping to a variable-speed pump, adding a salt system, or wiring in app automation is cheap insurance against a mid-summer breakdown, and the pool being down for a resurface is the perfect window to do it.

Know When It Is a True Rebuild

A genuine rebuild is rare. It only makes sense when the gunite shell itself has structural cracks that keep returning, when the pool is losing water through the shell, or when you want to change the shape or depth entirely. If the shell is sound, a resurface and a remodel will get you a like-new pool near Higley Road for far less than starting over.

Get an Honest On-Site Look

The only way to know for sure is to have someone inspect the shell, tile, deck, and equipment together and tell you straight which level of work fits. If you are weighing your options, contact us and we will walk your backyard with you.
